The YMCA of Okanagan will be assuming operations of the Kelowna Secondary School’s Young Parents Program effective May 15, 2017.
Through a partnership between Central Okanagan Public Schools and the YMCA of Okanagan, this program enables young parents to continue their educational studies through to graduation. Young parents return to school in as little as six to eight weeks after giving birth, making the need for a safe and quality child care necessary.
In addition to providing care for the infants, the YMCA will provide parenting education, life-skills training and support for the young parents.
“The YMCA has provided quality child care in our community for over 20 years, and has extensive experience in providing both parenting education and life-skills training to young adults.” states Sharon Peterson, YMCA of Okanagan CEO. “Helping youth make a successful transition to adulthood is important for these young parents and we are looking forward to being a part of their success.”
Moyra Baxter, Central Okanagan School District Board Chair says, "The expansion of our partnership with the YMCA of Okanagan will support our teen-parents in their journey toward graduation and beyond."
In addition to up to ten spaces designated for young parents, there will also be an additional 18 spaces for infants and toddlers in the centre that will be available to the general public. Registration for these spaces is available now.
“We are excited to expand the number of children we can serve in the centre, especially infant and toddler spaces that are so desperately needed in our community,” states Peterson.
The YMCA is also looking to hire several early childhood educators for the centre, with openings listed on their website.
