With a shortage of child care spaces available in Kelowna, the YMCA of Okanagan has opened an additional child care facility on the property of Kelowna Secondary School.

This new centre will help ease the struggle of families who’ve been waiting for child care spaces locally.

“The need for child care in the area is growing,” reports Danielle Miranda, senior manager of child care programs at the YMCA of Okanagan. “This new centre will help address this issue, providing families an option for affordable, quality care for their children.”

The YMCA’s newest child care centre — located adjacent to their current centre, YMCA Little Scholars — currently has spaces open for children ages three to five years old. Though this facility does serve families with newborns to five years of ages, there is already a waitlist for infant and toddler programs.

At the YMCA, staff realize not every family can afford child care. That’s why, with the help of generous donors in the community, the YMCA of Okanagan offers financial assistance to families who cannot afford the full cost of care.

“A healthy community starts with our children,” says Miranda. “We want families to know that they can come to us regardless of their financial circumstance, and we will do what we can to help them access care. In addition, children who are enrolled in YMCA Child Care programs also receive a YMCA membership giving them access to healthy resources and programs at a young age.”

The YMCA is the largest child care provider across Canada. Their new centre at Kelowna Secondary School will continue to host the Young Parents Program, while opening the rest of the centre to the public.

“This child care centre enables parents of all ages the opportunity to focus on progressing their education or career, trusting their children have been left in a qualified and caring environment,” explains Miranda.
