The first phase of our operating plan will start on Monday, June 29, with the opening of our fitness centres at the Kelowna Family YMCA, H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre and the Downtown Y. There will be new standards and cleaning practices in place to protect the health of our members, staff and community.

We hope the following information will answer your questions regarding your Y’s reopening, but if you have further inquiries please reach out to us at membership@ymcaokanagan.ca or 250-491-9622 ext. 1.

Hours of Operation

Upon opening on June 29, the Y will operate under modified hours as follows:

  • Monday to Friday from 5:30am to 9:00pm
  • Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am to 5:00pm
  • Statutory Holidays from 9:00am to 5:00pm

At this time, you do not need to book a time to access the fitness centre. We’ve closely reviewed past usage volumes for July and August which have consistently been well below the capacity we’ve established for adhering to physical distancing guidelines. We will have a staff member at the door ensuring we’re not exceeding capacity. If for some reason we have a sudden influx of members all at once, you may need to wait. We will continue to monitor usage and update our procedures as needed.

As a member of the YMCA of Okanagan, I agree to the following code of conduct:

  • Stay home when I am sick. I will not enter the YMCA if I have had symptoms of COVID-19 in the last 10 days; have been directed by Public Health to self-isolate, have arrived from outside of Canada within the last 14 days or have been in contact with someone who has.
  • Adhere to a pre-screening questionnaire every time I enter the building
  • Have my membership card ready to scan to access the facility
  • Respect the physical distancing markers and maintain a safe physical distance at all times – at least 2 m / 6 ft
  • Properly wash my hands often and use proper hygiene etiquette
  • Follow all health, safety, and directional signage
  • Adhere to capacity limits as posted
  • Limit my visits to no more than 60 minutes per day and 30 minutes when using the cardio machines
  • Pre-reserve my Group Fitness class thru the online reservation software, show up for my booking and limit class attendance to once per day. If I am not able to attend a class that I have reserved, I will cancel my reservation online prior to the start of class.
  • Clean all workout equipment and other frequently touched objects before and after every use
  • Come to the Y wearing my fitness attire and indoor shoes
  • Use locker rooms at my discretion and adhere to maximum capacity signage for these spaces. Members are reminded that physical distancing is each person’s responsibility. If you are uncomfortable in any space, you may wear a mask, face shield or step away
  • Please note in the Member Plus locker rooms that towels, coffee and complimentary personal items will not be provided during this phase
  • Bring a pre-filled water bottle to workout. No-touch fill stations will be available, but water fountains will not
  • BE KIND. I understand that I will be asked to leave the facility if I am not adhering to and/or following the guidelines, policies, procedures and/or the core values outlined by my YMCA

We recognize that there are differing levels of comfort with potential virus exposure – some people think the COVID restrictions in place are too stringent and some think that they’re not stringent enough.  Our YMCA is dedicated to adhering to the public health guidelines and will be strictly enforcing all the policies we have in place. We have a responsibility to ensure the safety of everyone in our centres. Staff are particularly vulnerable to virus exposure as they will be circulating throughout the centres for several hours/day, while you as members will only access the centres for short periods. If it is apparent that you are not respecting the safeguards and preventative measures we have in place, you will be asked to leave.

At this time the following programs, services and spaces are temporarily CLOSED until further notice:

  • All pool access, including saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and pool accessible locker rooms
  • Childminding and all aquatics programming including swimming lessons

What we are doing to keep you safe:

  • Reducing facility capacities and group sizes for programs and classes
  • Adhering to rigorous sanitation practices. Using electrostatic disinfectant sprayers, combined with frequent touch-point and deep cleaning throughout the day.
  • Providing cleaning and sanitizing stations throughout the facilities
  • Installed protective barriers at member services and fitness desks
  • Spacing equipment and closing certain pieces/areas to allow for physical distancing
  • For those still practicing physical distancing YThrive – motivational workouts, health and fitness content and resources will remain available to keep you healthy and fit!
  • Member access only; live feed of scheduled group fitness classes and access to videos on demand

If you have further questions, please contact the YMCA via email membership@ymcaokanagan.ca and we will get back to you in 2-4 business days. If you do not have access to email, please call 250-491-9622, and press 1. When leaving a message, be sure to include your full name, membership number, phone number, and reason for your call or email. For any other inquiries unrelated to membership, please email hello@ymcaokanagan.ca.

We are working on a phased reopening – starting with our fitness facilities – on Monday, June 29, 2020 for the following centres:

  • Kelowna Family YMCA
  • Kelowna Downtown YMCA
  • H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre

We will be providing you with information over the coming weeks as we prepare our next phases of reopening.

Even though we are reopening on June 29, membership payments will not resume until July 15. Please note your payment will be on your regular scheduled date (ie July 15, July 22, July 31, August 1, etc).

The YMCA offers a financial sponsorship program to ensure all members - especially those most impacted by the pandemic — are able to stay with the Y. Please email membership@ymcaokanagan.ca and include your full name, membership number, phone number and that you are inquiring about financial assistance. A Member Services staff will call you to discuss your circumstance in confidence and provide you with the temporary or long-term assistance to keep you active at the Y.

If you don’t feel comfortable returning to the YMCA when we reopen, or have health concerns that require you to continue self-isolating, we will gladly extend your membership hold. Please email membership@ymcaokanagan.ca to request a membership hold, including your full name, membership number, phone number and reason for hold.

The fitness centres at all three YMCA locations will open on June 29. All exercise spaces have been modified to adhere to physical distancing guidelines and allow for ease of access to hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes. We will also be offering some summer children’s programming, including camps, at the Kelowna Family YMCA and H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre.

Opening in late July or early August may be feasible with limitations in place regarding access and which amenities will be available.

Yes. We will be offering group fitness classes beginning July 6, 2020 as well as a modified version of our Health Promotion Programs. These classes will be limited during our Phase 1 reopening to balance our goals of bringing back your favourite classes while ensuring effective safeguards are in place. All group fitness studios will be properly spaced out and reduced in size to facilitate physical distancing requirements. Our facility schedules are now posted on our schedules page for you to view and class registration will open June 29.

Please note that our live classes will no longer be live streamed through Facebook and Instagram as of June 28.  Beginning July 6, our facility fitness schedules will be live streamed and available through our online registration system so all active YMCA members can participate in-person or virtually.

Please note that if your membership is on hold, you will not have access to these virtual classes.

At this time, Interior Health has advised that all indoor group and court-based sports remain suspended.

Yes. We are very excited to announce that we will be offering drop-in style recreation programs outdoors free with membership! We know that the biggest impact the COVID restrictions have had on children is their ability to engage in physical activity and play with their friends. Our focus is to get kids active and interactive at the Y this summer. Visit our website at ymcaokanagan.ca/summer for the most up to date information.

Yes. While we are currently operating with limited staff, we are working hard to prepare for an exceptional summer season for your children. Registration for July camps opened June 15, and registration for August will begin July 20. A full schedule can be found on our website at . Learn more
